	Ingrid Weetjens : JUNO- destination Unknown



	Achter JUNO-destination Unknown - zit singer-songwriter Ingrid Weetjens. Een muzikale duizendpoot, die moeilijk in een hokje te plaatsen is. Haar onzekerheden en sterktes vertalen zich in haar muziek. Melancholie wordt afgewisseld met een sterke levensdrijfveer, steeds zoekend en nieuwsgierig. Ze behaalde haar Master jazz-zang aan het Koninklijk Conservatorium in Brussel waar ze les volgde bij David Linx en Kris Defoort. Ze overstijgt met gemak verschillende muziekgenres. Als singer-songwriter ontroert ze met haar meeslepend jazzy stemgeluid en aangrijpende muziek. Misschien ken je haar van project “Letras Do Brasil”, waarbij ze samenwerkte met pianist- gitarist Pierre Anckaert en Stefan Bracaval. Zij weten het intieme karakter van het Brazilaanse genre perfect te benadrukken . Letras Do Brasil is een weerspiegeling van haar muzikale belevingswereld. Het is een mix van melancholie, tristesse, hoop en dromen. Of het project “DRIFT” met Dirk De Wachter. In de hoop dat psychische problemen eindelijk meer bespreekbaar worden en hun uitweg in Kunst vinden. Voor haar nieuw project JUNO-destination Unknown ging ze op zoek naar een meer specifieke sound die beter bij het karakter van de songs past. Ze zocht naar een versmelting van akoestische sounds met electronische klanken. Op de geboortedag van haar dochter was Juno, de NASA satelliet, op missie naar Jupiter en scheerde in een korte vlucht langs de aarde. Daarom besloot ze haar project te vernoemen naar deze speciale, magische dag. Juno - destination Unknown werd geboren. A story to be discovered, a destination Unknown. Er werd nauw samen gewerkt met producer, Joes Brands. We hebben vooral véél tijd genomen om na te denken over de sound. Ik wilde dat het authentiek zou klinken daarom vond ik het belangrijk dat er véél pure, akoustische klanken werden opgenomen zoals de stemmen, de contrabas, de trompet, de cello, de piano. Deze pure klanken mochten we niet verliezen. Dat was de kern, de essentie waarrond alles opgebouwd zou worden. Zodat er een mooie , nieuwe sound ontstond: een versmelting tussen akoustische en electronische klanken met een destination Unknown. En daarnaast vond ik het héél belangrijk dat er telkens een verhaal werd verteld waarin je wordt meegenomen, dat er een boodschap achter de muziek zat. ……. Ze zocht inspiratie zowel in Jazz, als indiepop genres. Zelf omschrijft ze de stijl als eclectic indie pop. Als eerste single stelt ze ‘All In Good Time’ voor. Mijn boodschap achter het lied: Onze maatschappij is een weerspiegeling van het individu. De individualistische evolutie zorgt ervoor dat we minder connectie hebben met de natuur en omgeving rondom is. De focus op het Ik maakt ons dikwijls te gretig en neemt voeling weg ten opzichte van wat er rondom ons leeft. We willen niet zien dat alles met alles in verbinding staat en dat wij een verantwoordelijkheid hebben en dat er grenzen zijn aan ons gedrag. Ik wil ons wakker schudden met het lied en hoop geven dat we allemaal kunnen zorgen voor mekaar en de aarde. Dat we kunnen veranderen….en liefst zo snel mogelijk…

	nieuwe release 'Citizen of the World'

	David has an insatiable passion for music. In the early nineties, you would find him in the music scenes of Mechelen and Leuven, where he met guitarist Charly Verbinnen. They decided to join forces and together with various rhythm sections, they toured the Belgian and Dutch stages of the rock & blues circuit. In 2017, Marco Epis (drums and percussion) and Tim Van Passel (bass) joined the band. Inspired by his greatest heroes, among whom Steve Earl, Neil Young, Bruce Springsteen and Johnny Cash, David started to write and compose own songs. “Citizen of the World” can best be described as a mix of bluesy rootsrock and dreamy Americana. The album contains 9 own songs about relations, love and the injustice in the world, and on top of that David’s interpretation of Hey Hey My My, Neil Young’s ode to the R&R and an acoustic version of Charly’s hero Jimi Hendrix’s Voodoo Chile.



	The Band

	With Charly Verbinnen on guitar, Tim Van Passel on bass and Marco Epis on drums and percussion, the band found its own sound, which accompanies David’s hoarse voice and his guitar sound to perfection. For the recordings at Studio Fandango, the band was assisted by Pascale Michiels and Luk de Graaff for the backing vocals, Niels Verhees on Hammond and piano, Steve Ceulemans on the banjo, Dirk Lekenne on slide guitar and Wim Degeest on blues harp. Armed with guitar, blessed with a raw, aged voice and supported by a group of groovy musicians who have earned their spurs on the Belgian and Dutch rock and blues scene over the years, David Ronaldo presents a mix of bluesy rootsrock & Americana music. In November 2019 they released the album 'Citizen of the world'. A few year earlier there was already the ‘Live ‘ CD with full band which is called ‘The Dice’. At concerts, their own songs from this album are seamlessly interspersed with quirky covers of their musical heroes such as (Neil young, Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Jimi Hendrix, Rory Gallagher, the Stones, Led Zeppelin,...)



	The band plays concerts in two settings : - Acoustic 3 piece band - intimate concerts in an atmospheric setting - Full electric band - solid groovy rootsrock soaked in a bluesy sauce.

	CD voorstelling : DELL LILLINGER WESTERGAARD : “GRAMMAR II“
	Release: 6th of December 2019 PLAIST (EDEL)

GRAMMAR II by DLW (Dell Lillinger Westergaard) pushes the boundaries of experimental music yet again. The album documents the progress by the three musicians (Christopher Dell vibraphone, Christian Lillinger drums, Jonas Westergaard bass) over the last seven years. This stems from the theory and practices developed since the release of GRAMMAR on gligg records in 2012.

GRAMMAR II was recorded live on June 12th, 2019 at Loft in Cologne. Christopher Dell: “GRAMMAR II examines and experiments on structural framework as a set of strategic musical viewpoints that inform the practices of DLW as a community of players.”

At the heart of the recording lies the production of music both as improvisational form-making as well as technology. In the process, the recording documents amongst other things the emergence of musical concepts through the framework of structure. Furthermore, it examines the identification with improvisation and the exploration of the outer limits of rhythmical, melodic and harmonic control. Finally, it sets out new areas in the realm of music research and collaboration.

Given the ambitious nature of the album, the release on Christian Lillinger’s label PLAIST is no coincidence. This platform expresses the ever inquisitive, questioning approach, which underlies the methodology of the three players. GRAMMAR II allows for complete expression of artistic freedom. This is reflected in the fact that all production aspects (recording, post-production, release date, design, etc) have been overseen by the ensemble.

What appears to be a formal challenge for the listener at first, reveals itself to be a composition, which is highly complex yet thoroughly structured. Andreas Müller (Deutschlandfunk) sees this aspect as an adventure in the area of tonality: “These three lead us over cracked planes, through dark valleys and still there are always little pockets of melodies blossoming along the way.” Roland Schmenner (Fidelity Magazin) interprets the music’s richness as follows: “The listener does not simply hear abstract structures. Due to the intensity of the collaboration, emotional and physical aspects superimpose themselves on to the structure. Thereby, grammatical structures are filled with meaning and with life.”

The music breaks new ground as Christopher Dell explains: “’GRAMMAR II’ is formulated in line with the theory of improvisation technology and open form: a paradigm shift in the making of music, at every scale envisaged to help us define ourselves and position ourselves in the time and space in which we live.”

All three musicians ensure that the focal point of the music always remains the ensemble. The purpose of improvisation is to serve the music. Andreas Müller understands it as follows: “The music combines high density with floating lightness at the same time. Three musicians become one. Egos are non- existent. This is more than a collective. These musicians form a new organism.”

Roland Schmenner summarises: “’GRAMMAR II‘ creates its own system. This is not simply self-referential, but it communicates from the players to the listener.

“This is music on a next level; made in Berlin”, concludes Andreas Müller

The trio DLW combines energetic playing with structural composition in real time. The interaction results in high energy that materializes in different layers of sounds, relationscapes. Form comes into being through musical production. Thereby, the trio transcends the usual dichotomy of rhythm section vs. solo player.

Their recording “GRAMMAR“ (released on gligg-records) demonstrates the trios specific structural approach to form making in manifold perspectives. Other projects include their collaboration with electronic musician and producer Johannes Brecht as DBLW, which is documented in their release “BOULEZ MATERIALISM” from 2018(PLAIST).

	'Henri' featuring Logan Richardson

	Dankzij de samenwerking met BOZAR kon Jean-Paul, Logan Richardson uitnodigen op enkele tracks van het album en tijdens het release concert in BOZAR te Brussel. Een paar jaar geleden hadden de twee reeds het podium gedeeld en toen merkte Estiévenart op dat het spel van Logan 'zeer oprecht is, en recht op zijn doel afgaat zoals de echte oude meesters'.

R.I.P. LUQUE (1.10.1951 - 4.12-2019)

Geheel onverwacht overleed goeie vriend en JAZZEPOES jarenlange medewerker Luc 'Luque' Derkinderen op woensdag 4 December. De helpende, inventieve hand overal waar dat nodig was, een vakman met hout maar ook met woorden, wat niet iedereen bekend was. Een 'breed' muziekliefhebber was die ook, nuchter en met een klare, zij het wat eigenzinnige kijk op het leven.

We zullen hem missen....nee, we missen hem nu al...

Het laatste gedicht dat ik van 'm terugvond op ons aller Facebook waar die graag ook z'n commentaren spuide op al wat'm roerde in de samenleving en dat ook al es graag van een tekening voorzag, voeg ik hieronder toe. Hij is niet meer maar blijft voor altijd in onze herinnering,

	Tricycle 20 !

	Met Tuur Florizoone (accordeon), Philippe Laloy (saxen & fluit) en Vincent Noiret (contrabas) gaf Tricycle in de Ancienne Belgique (11.11.19) de kick-off van de 20 Years Tricycle Tour met de première van de cd ‘ZOOM’. Het concert in de AB was meteen de ideale gelegenheid voor een nieuwe professionele videoclip, met dank aan Joop Pareyn die instond voor beeld en montage. Alle tourdata in België tot eind januari op www.tricycle.be waar men ook de cd ‘Zoom’ kan bestellen. Die telt 13 nieuwe composities waarin het trio opnieuw de grenzen aftast van de jazz, wereldmuziek, filmmuziek en klassieke muziek, met een typisch ‘Belgisch’ geluid als eindresultaat.

	Machiel Heremans en Rebekka Van Bockstal, kortweg No Wasabi, is een experimenteel gitaarduo dat via dromerige klanken, echo’s en loops de luisteraar meesleept in hun muzikale trip. De twee gitaristen leerden elkaar kennen aan het Koninklijk Conservatorium van Brussel waar ze een gedeelde passie ontwikkelden voor gitaareffecten, vrije improvisatie en compositie. Deze drie elementen worden in hun muziek dan ook verwerkt. Het eerste album van No Wasabi wordt een krachtig maar toch intiem verhaal waarbij galm een specifieke rol speelt met de kerk als opnamelocatie. Release datum: 8/11/2019		Sinds 2013 biedt Jean-Paul Estiévenart ons ongekunstelde en pure muziek. Hij schrijft voor zijn trio trompet, contrabas en drums - een minimalistische formatie. Voor zijn nieuwe project wil hij de luisteraar een ander facet van zijn werk als componist bieden. Hij omringt zichzelf met harmonische instrumenten: Nicola Andrioli aan de piano en Romain Pilon op gitaar, die de basis vormen waarop Jean-Paul zijn trompet met kracht en finesse plaatst ... Alvorens ze ook zelf overgaan tot verbluffende solo’s! Voor de ritmesectie brengt hij Nicolas Thys en Antoine Pierre samen (zij vormen ook de ritmesectie van TaxiWars en Harcsa / Gyemant kwartet). De symbiose tussen de drummer en de trompettist hoeft niet meer te worden aangetoond (Urbex, Jean-Paul Estiévenart Trio, Lorenzo Di Maio Group, ...). De muziek van het kwintet, hoewel gevulder dan die van het trio, blijft gekenmerkt door de grote muzikale kwaliteit van Estiévenart: zijn soberheid. Zonder woorden vertelt de trompettist ons over wat hij het beste kent: zichzelf. De titels van Strange Bird navigeren door het hart van zijn leven. Ze nodigen uit ons over te geven aan de absorberende kracht van emoties, versterkt door muziek. Het hele album is in één keer in Spanje geschreven. Dit geeft het een unieke en coherente esthetiek. Wanneer je er van begin tot eind naar luistert, krijg je de indruk dat je ondergedompeld wordt in een prachtig boek. Dankzij de samenwerking met BOZAR kon Jean-Paul, Logan Richardson uitnodigen op enkele tracks van het album en tijdens het release concert in BOZAR te Brussel. Een paar jaar geleden hadden de twee reeds het podium gedeeld en toen merkte Estiévenaert op dat het spel van Logan “zeer oprecht is, en recht op zijn doel afgaat zoals de echte oude meesters “. With music as free as this, it is hard to put your finger on what exactly it is that makes it tick, but the explanation might be a simple one. "Despite the low volumes, the generous use of space, the long, explorative tones and surprisingly subtle harmonies, the subdued and intimate music on Segment Tones (and other related albums) keeps the flame of dissent burning. Just as the clattering of rambunctious free jazz can be regarded as a tumultuous answer to political provocations and general madness, the minimalist means of this album are as determined in their refusal to comply. While all these droning textures and unusual techniques might sound like a concentrated private affair, bundled together they also turn into an act of resistance, showing there is an alternative to greed, rancor and prejudice, and also to fear and uncertainty. This might be a ‘small’ release on a little DIY- label from Belgium (of all places), but it represents a larger world of possibilities. " Guy Peters

Apart from the matter of trust (both artists need to rely on each other’s sound judgement), there is always the question of who inspires who to what. The path towards a result turns this combination of sources and treatments into something entirely new. Tietchens might have the last word (or so you would think), but even then his partner co-decides what happens. It is a discussion that took place with delay, but still remains, in effect, a discussion, about starting points, decision-making, reciprocity and maybe also the music of chance." Guy Peters

	…een kouwe herfstavond is het als ik binnensteek bij KC NONA voor de release van Niels’ z’n allernieuwste waar die apetrots op is ook : ‘Spread Love or Stay Home’noemt het album en verkrijgbaar zowel op vinyl als op CD.



	Een projectrelease is het eigenlijk, bijeengeschreven door Niels en z’n Friends, een bont gezelschap van jonge getalenteerde muzikanten onder leiding van doorwinterde rot in het vak, Patrick Riguelle.


	Het is intussen een bekend concept waar Niels met een riff op gitaar inzet en de band daarop verder gaat breien, mooie invullingen neerzet op cello en lap steel.



	De vocals, dat zijn niet alleen de teksten van vooral Patrick maar die zingt ze ook want hola, da’s niks voor Niels, dat zingen en daar waagt die zich dan ook wijselijk niet aan.



	Verhaaltjes brengen in soms meeslepende melodieën, da’s wat voor hem en van start gaat die met ‘Angelique’ en daar keuvelt die eerst nog een heel verhaal rond tussen Waddeneilanden en Dijlefeesten….Da’s verder zowat het handelsmerk van Niels, die bindteksten met het hart op de tong, doodeerlijk, spontaan en grappig. Als ie meent dat hij d’er het oog op de tijd gaat bij verliezen corrigeert die zich gauw…’Ik ga m’n gitaar nemen zie en we gaan er aan beginnen…’Een radiohit scoren zoals Tom Kestens , dat zit d’er ook meteen niet in denkt-ie en met ‘Spaniël Tab’ (naar Spinal Tap) zou dat misschien niet zo lukken maar ‘Super Groove’, wat de band herneemt tijdens de bis , heeft naar mijn gevoel wél hitpotentieel. ‘Beau’, met een tekst uit een nummer van de Amerikaanse muzikant Moondog, een tekst ‘die niet noodzakelijk’ over maat Beau gaat met wie hij naar KV Mechelen ging kijken, volgt en wat later komt het titelnummer van de plaat met lyrics van Tom Kestens en die vocals gaan dan trouwens ook naar Tom die intussen, zo verneem ik, vast deel gaat uitmaken van de band. Vrouwen, da’s een ander én geliefd thema dat Niels graag aangrijpt en, als ze ook nog es behoren bij de toppers onder onze vrouwelijke contrabassisten, dan krijgen ze een eigen nummer ook zoals met ‘When Lara plays the bass (my heart beats faster)’, opgedragen aan de ons welbekende Lara Rosseel. Bassist Rik Lenaerts vanavond kan dan uitpakken met gepaste plukken aan de snaren !



	Het applaus is dikwijls uitbundig van een enthousiast en duidelijk gecharmeerd publiek waarin die intussen een kopstuk uit de Mechelse politiek heeft gespot. Da’s dan weer een excuus voor een volgend kort relaas over z’n stemgedrag en wat dat juist weer met de song ‘Indrani’s Spell’ te maken had, dat is me intussen ontgaan. ’Nannette’, een song voor z’,n petekindje krijgt een speelse benadering en dan komen we aan het eind van de avond met ‘Aska Me’, het eerste nummer van het voorgestelde album maar dat maakt niet uit. Hier staan er weer de lyrics op van Moondog en we krijgen er van Patrick in surplus nog het verhaal bij van deze Amerkaanse blinde muzikant/componist uit vorige eeuw, een anekdote van een telefoongesprek dat Stef Kamil Carlens (Deus, Zita Swoon…Moondog Junior !) ooit voerde vanuit Oostende met Moondog die toen in Duitsland woonde… ‘Kei goe Niels ! Dat is met je eigen woorden gezegd, wat het publiek (een 135 man, een uitverkochte zaal met zelfs extra zitjes op het podium , nog nooit gezien hier! ) er vanavond van vond en de finale ‘Street Spirit’ van Radiohead bleek de kers op de taart ! Iedereen uit het publiek ging met Niels handjes schudden achteraf en dat was wel héél duidelijk : Niels z’n Friends waren niet alleen op het podium te vinden ! Kei tof !

	LE RAVAGE D’ALI BABA





	Verhalen en impressies uit vluchtelingenkampen verwerkt in een creatieve, uitdagende voorstelling met muziek, woord en beeld.

	‘Le Ravage d’Ali Baba’ is een project van De Koffie Van Morgen, creatief platform van drummer en grafisch artiest Simon Plancke. Als vrijwilliger bij Vzw Humain ontstond bij hem het i dee om iets te doen met verhalen van vluchtelingen, nadat nadat hij vaststelde dat de beeldvorming over deze groep mensen te eenzijdig was en niet strookte met zijn ervaringen. Die drang werd vertaald in een multimediale voorstelling. Voor de muziek deed Plancke een beroep op een paar jonge kleppers van de Belgische jazz: Hendrik Lasure, Thijs Troch en Elias Devoldere, bekend van o.m. SCHNTZL, An Pierlé Quartet, Nordmann, Hypochristmutreefuzz,... Ze trokken met vrijwilligers van Vzw Humain naar vluchtelingenkampen in Brussel en Duinkerke. De gesprekken die ze daar hadden met mensen op de vlucht duiken op in een concertreeks bij JazzLab (vanaf 1/12), maar ook op een album dat ze opnamen bij Koen Gisen. Op 1 december verschijnt via WERF Records een boek+cd, dat wordt voorgesteld tijdens de première i n KAAP/Vrijstaat O. (Oostende). Het boek bevat teksten van 9 geëngageerde auteurs die ook meegingen naar de vluchtelingenkampen en hun indrukken en opgetekende verhalen verwerkten in persoonlijke bijdragen: Anne Provoost, Yasmien Naciri, Aya Sabi, Dalilla Hermans, Carmien Michels, Sabrine Ingabire, Rachida Lamrabet, Birsen Taspinar en Ann Lamon. Daarnaast bevat het boek fotomateriaal van Light Of The Children, dat kinderen zelf foto’s liet maken in de vluchtelingenkampen. De concerten worden bovendien aangevuld met nieuw beeldmateriaal van filmmaakster Lisa Tahon. De concertreeks zal ook gepaard gaan met een inzamelingsactie in samenwerking met de diverse locaties en hulporganisatie Vzw Humain.
